WE NEED YOU!
Mission: Clear the entire West Papio Trail system from Blondo to Lake Zorinsky. When: Sunday January 17th. 1-pm start or whenever you can help.
Where: Multiple Locations along West Papio Trail (see below)
UPDATE!!!!!!
As of Saturday 1-16-10 I've checked most of the West Papio Trail from 144th & F to 160th & Blondo. Some areas have had a truck and plow drive the trail, while other sections have had no snow removal at all. Below are specific areas that need addressed. Click on the embedded link to see a map of the area. Feel free to attack any portion you wish. If you're using only a shovel you're needed at bridges and underpasses mainly. If you're using a snow blower you're needed more on the straightaways. See below for more information.
Southwest: 144th & 'F' Street (24-hour fitness) 2-Stage blower required. Trail runs from the bridge that crosses 144th Street and runs behind (north) of 24-hr Fitness and continues to the 'Y' shaped split that takes you to Lake Zorinsky (southwest) or north down the West Papio trail. Start from 24-hour fitness parking lot and work your way as far as you can. This portion has not been touched and is snow-packed. You'll have to hike across a portion of snow that have been pushed onto the trail by whoever plows the 24-hr Fitness lot. Once on the trail you'll know what to do.
Scutt High School: 156th & W. Center. 2-Stage Blower and shovels. Trail runs behind Scutt high school both north and south directions. There is a pedestrian bridge to the south that will need shovel and blower work. This bridge is at the 'Y' split that connects to the 24-Hr Fitness portion of the trail and to Lake Zorinsky. If you work your way north you'll travel underneath 156th Street and further down you'll travel underneath W. Center Road. Some portions of the trail have been cleared by truck from W. Center north.
Bridge at Bob Boozer and Morton Elementary. Snow shovels and blower. This section runs through a park and behind Morton Elementary school. A pedestrian bridge crosses the Papio creek and boarders Bob Boozer Drive. Shovels will be needed to clear the bridge and drifts north and south of there. Snow blowers could be used as well to go north or south as needed.
Pacific & Bob Boozer underpass: Blowers and Shovels. The west Papio Trail travels under Pacific street at this location then continues west for a while. All equipment is needed here! You can park in the parking lot of 159th Ave and Pacific and work your way west up the trail to the Pacific bridge I mentioned or north down the trail to another pedestrian bridge. The pedestrian bridge I mentioned can be reached by another small parking lot seen here. These areas need a lot of work the last I checked.
Dodge to Pacific: Open trail with no bridges along this section. This area needs snow blowers since it's a long open stretch. You can park near 164th and California (north of Dodge) and work your way south under the Dodge overpass or park near 163rd and Chicago (south of Dodge) and work your way north or south. I've been told that the trail has been cleared from Dodge to Blondo.
Blondo North/South: This is where I will start. Blowers and shovels needed to work both south and north. Mainly south. This is a trail hub near a park and is a good location to have as a Start location to open the trail. There is an underpass under Blondo as well as a 1-mile stretch of open trail. I plan to work my way south from the park at 160th and Burdette right near the tennis courts. This is also the location I suggested that the news media meet us. There may be media here unless a more dramatic story needs covered.
We only need to clear enough snow to allow pedestrian or bike travel. We don't need to clean the entire width of the path.
Things to consider: WE ARE ALL VOLUNTEERS and ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR OUR OWN ACTIONS. If you get hurt or injured or damage your equipment only YOU are responsible. No one is in charge of this effort. No one is asking you to perform any duties. We are only conveying information about snow blockages along the West Papio Trail. If you choose to take action and clear snow you are doing so as an independent volunteer under no ones direction. There is nothing illegal about clearing snow from public trails as long as you are only clearing snow and not violating any other laws. Do not drive on the trail, damage property or litter, please.
Note: BRING YOUR CAMERA so that you can share photos of your work. No matter if you clear 10-feet of path or a mile, we want to see your handy work.
Remember our goal. To open up the entire West Papion Trail to pedestrians and cyclists. Any amount of snow clearing will be appreciated by people who need this trail opened. If we fall short, that's OK. The reward comes from knowing we entered the battle, not necessarily that we won the war. Be careful, dress warm, bring food and water and extra gasoline.

I've got a small pickup with a camper shell. As long as I can still get my bike in the back, I can carry whatever need to be carried.
ReplyDeleteIf I'm available, I'll be arriving with a minivan, my Long Haul Trucker, a bike trailer that can carry 150 pounds (hauling gas cans may be a good use for this), shovels, and an extra pair of kid sized hands.
ReplyDeleteOne suggestion. Bring small bits of paper, clear packing tape, and sharpies. That way people can label their shovels, gear, gas cans, etc. If we are moving quickly, things will be mixed up and misplaced.
Scott: If you live close to Ryan F. and if he's willing to loan, or volunteer, he may need transportation of his 2-stage thrower. Problem is I doubt it will fit in your truck with a camper shell.
ReplyDeleteBob: I will also have a 5-gal gas can with me. Issues will be that if I continue down the trail without turning around I won't have the gas with me. I may need someone to leapfrog. All depends on who goes where and brings what. This will all be a learning experience since we'll be so spread out.
FYI: I purchased a large 2-stage snowblower today! Tried it out on the wet stuff. It works, but is slow going when the snow is wet and traveled. Still much quicker than a shovel. A special shout out to the business (who asked to remain anonymous) for donating a percentage of the purchase price of this snowblower to the GTC. This business donated almost $200 towards this purchase! Keep in mind most places are inflating the price of snowblowers due to their demand. I wish I could mention the name of the business but they as that I didn't. They did say that they would extend the same offer to any other GTC volunteer. So if you're in the market and are a GTC volunteer, contact me and I'll give you my contact person. One condition...the snowblower must be used for GTC trail clearing.
I'll add this to the "weekend plans" discussion at our house. We're big West Papio users and will try to be there. At the very least, I can provide moral support. :)
ReplyDeleteLast time I checked, north of the W.Dodge bridge was not cleared, but south of the bridge was for a least .2 or .3 miles.
Awesome job procuring equipment, Mike!!
Excellent Jules! We'll be honored to have you there, blower, shovel or just shouts of encouragement. It's all appreciated! Also, thanks for the recon on Dodge north and south. I believe Blondo to Dodge may be clear for the most part. I'll do further checking.
ReplyDeleteBob with a BOB trialer would be very cool. That could be very useful for transporting supplies and tools deeper into the zones of action.
ReplyDeleteMike with a snowblower. Wow, what a committment, and great job in getting a discount from your supplier. I sure wish they could be called out, but I suppose I understand why not. At least they'll let you pass it in word of mouth to others who want to buy.
Julie with her platoon, or without, will be most appreciated.
I read on another blog that Munson is in.
My offer to transport something via my truck stands. I don't want to remove the shell, but anything that fits inside is welcome.
I have a feeling that lots will melt tomorrow and Saturday, so we may end up scooping lots of slush. However, slush refreezes nightly, and it is still winter, so moving that stuff is a good idea.
We may not have the same Twitter effect we had before, but I'll try to keep it fresh, but not overdone, until Sunday.
There's a couple more volunteers that have contacted me who have 2-stage blowers. One lives far south along the West Papio and will start clearing near the 24-hour fitness near 144th Street and work his was north towards Zorinsky. This portion is very heavily traveled by people in the neighborhoods commuting to the industrial areas off of 144th as well as schools in Millard. More recon and more details tonight.
ReplyDeleteThanks Scott, Bob, Julie & crew, Zach, Jim, Munson and all of the countless others who I anticipate will be joining forces with us.
Twitter the next level #SafeRouteSunday - even if you can't join the GTC to help clear the trail, find a sidewalk/corner blocked in your neighborhood and clear it.
ReplyDeleteHey D, I don't have any removal tools other than my two hands, but I am willing to show up and help where ever there are extra tools. Give me a call on Sunday and give me some direction on where to head and I'll go.
ReplyDeleteThe bonny lass and I would love to help out. Live out west (waterloo) and could move a snowblower (someone elses) to wherever it is needed. otherwise we will bring shovels and a general contempt for snow drifts. Let us know where we should go
ReplyDeleteWhat's the meeting point? Do we have enough to split into teams and start at different places?
ReplyDeleteAs much as I love to bike my rides, I'm likely to drive my small pickup from midtown with a couple of shovels and my bike in the back. I can offer one other person and some equipment a ride.
Scott: Volunteers can meet or start at any of the locations suggested on the blog. I personally am starting at 160th and Burdette where there is a trail hub. This location is linked on the blog update. This is also where I told the media to meet us. I will be there around 1 or 1:15 and will have a blower, gasoline and shovels. We can work our way north or south from this location. Another good location is the parking lot off of 159th and Pacific. Again, you can travel north and south to clear areas. Shovels will be needed to clear pedestrian bridges as well as the Pacific Street over and underpasses.
ReplyDeleteI'm in, so is my son Matthew. I have a one stage blower but no way to transport it from point to point. We will just join the crew with a few implements of destruction (ice chopper, shovels, Snow Wonder). Then, since I live close to the trail on Pacific, if it seems the blower would be helpful, I can pick it up with Bob's or Scott's assistance.
ReplyDeleteI'd consider picking up a two stage using the deal that Douglas mention, but I don't have time or transport means to do that today. Maybe tomorrow?...
Thanks for getting us organized!!!
Brian: Email me regarding the snow blower issue.

I'm still available to transport equipment and one other person in my small pickup with a camper shell.
ReplyDeleteFYI: I've made a Facebook event for this. Use the event page to invite your Facebook friends. Also, please use the event page to post your photos. That way we can get them all in one spot.
Email scottredd@yahoo.com and I can give your my phone/SMS number for more tactical communication.
This is gonna be fun!
Here's a possible complication for me. My truck doesn't like to start easily when the air is humid. I've run the battery down trying to start it today. I'm going to try to charge the battery today and get it started. If it doesn't start by tomorrow morning, I'll have to make alternate plans to get there (perhaps cycling the whole way, or utilize a bus or something) that may limit my ability to haul equipment.
ReplyDeleteThe Douglas, I'll drop you email with my phone number and cell number. I'm going to load up my trailer and stuff tonight and will hang close to your location with your gas in my trailer and some shovels and stuff. My son may also be in that trailer unless he wants to ride his own bike.
ReplyDeleteHere is the trailer I'm using: http://www.aosom.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=29&products_id=46
I got my truck started and the presumed soggy distributor dried out. Contact me by 11am if anyone needs anything hauled.
ReplyDeleteI also got an extra shovel. It's a narrow head, flat blade shovel with a short handle that should be good for ice. I also have a couple of Velcro straps if anyone needs help lashing a tool to their bike.
Please take photos!
ReplyDeleteI recommend that everyone share their photos in one of the following ways:
Add to the Facebook event page.
Use Twitter and tag the photos with the hashtag #BikeOMA
Use Flickr and tag the photos with BikeOMA
Send via email to me at scottredd@yahoo.com
If you make a YouTube video, please also tag with BikeOMA
Before and after pics takes from the same perspective would also be cool. Pictures of participants with their tools and bikes would be awesome.
